My Son

Dating back from the 4th to the 13th century CE, the My Son Sanctuary is a cluster of abandoned and partially ruined Hindu temples and situated within the elevated geological basin surrounded by the mountainous border of Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province.

The temples are in a valley roughly two kilometers wide that is surrounded by two mountain ranges. My Son is a site for religious ceremony for kings of the ruling dynasties of Champa as well as burial for the Champa Royalty and national heroes.

The Champa Kingdom is considered an important phenomenon in the political and cultural history of South East Asia. The ruins of My Son illustrates cultural interchange with the introduction of the Hindu architecture and the Indian subcontinent into South-East Asia, and its monuments are considered as the most important constructions of the My Son civilization. It is a remarkable architectural collection that developed over a period of ten centuries.

As of 1999, My Son has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

Numerous monuments, sculptures and other artifacts have been discovered in the area.
